Volunteer at St George's

How a little time could make a big impact

Volunteer at St George’s

St. George’s Chaplaincy relies on volunteer support for a range of activities from cleaning the church to conducting worship to day-to-day parish administration.

It is the people that make the Church.

Would you have a few hours in the week to help out in a voluntary capacity? We are currently looking to fill the volunteer vacancies listed below.

Or are you looking for a different volunteer role?

Because of our ongoing reliance on volunteer support, we expect we will need help in other areas very soon.

If you´d like to make contact and express interest in volunteering in another area, please complete the form at the bottom of the page.

Social Media Coordinator

The success of the Malaga Chaplaincy is heavily dependent on our engagement with the English-speaking communities in Malaga City and out into the province. Increasingly people are looking to social media for information on events and an understanding of the mission of organisations such as ours.

As a result, we are keen to engage a Social Media Coordinator, to raise the profile of our social media presence (currently Facebook, Instagram) and make it work with other comms channels. Activities include:

    • Creating and managing content for social media, including text posts, images, videos, and reels
    • Supporting our programmes, campaigns, events, and fundraising activities by promoting them on social media
    • Engaging with online communities, including responding to comments/messages and building and maintaining relationships with followers
    • Assessing the extent to which we need to widen our presence to other platforms
    • Using social media to raise awareness and support for the Church and its mission.

You would liaise with (1) those responsible for other comms channels, particularly our website, weekly bulletin & monthly magazine, posters and mailings and (2) our programme teams looking at liturgy, concerts/events, outreach, fundraising, who will be seeking routes to market. Much of this function can be done from home though from time-to-time some face-to-face meetings may be required.

Previous experience/knowledge/skills

    • Communication, creativity, organisational skills, and familiarity with various social media platforms essential
    • Experience in public relations, marketing, or journalism is valuable
    • Knowledge of the religious charity sector and respect for the Anglican tradition would be an asset
    • Knowledge of English essential. Spanish an asset

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is looking to build their CV in this area.  The post is initially for a period of one year, with a review after the first 3 months. Interested? Contact Fr Hilary here.

Bar Help

At approximately the rate of one per month over the summer months, St George’s runs Saturday night concerts. These have proved successful, attracting up to 100 people on each occasion. There is an interval during the concerts at which we service drinks/snacks from our bar.

The purpose of this role is to support the running of the bar, to ensure that people are served correctly & swiftly and charged the correct amount. The aim is to ensure that they have time to buy and consume their drink during the interval. Our expectation is that volunteersould work to a rota as part of a team.

Activities include:

    • Setting up and stocking the bar prior to opening
    • Greeting and serving customers politely and swiftly
    • Ensuring customers are charged the correct amount, and counting the income at the end of the interval
    • Cleaning up and washing glasses and other crockery/cutlery
    • Clearing the bar away after the interval

You will liaise primarily with the Churchwarden responsible for the bar, the Events Manager and other bar staff.

Previous experience of bar work is helpful but is not necessary as training and support will be provided.

Our expectation is that you would take on the role for one season, and then we would review.

Set Up and Serve at Sunday Services

Every Sunday morning we meet at St George’s church to celebrate the Eucharist. It is the central function of the church and it is what binds us together as a community. However this requires a number of functions/roles to ensure everything runs smoothly.

We are therefore looking for one or a number of individuals to help with the set up and running of our weekly Eucharist. Our expectation is that you would work to a rota as part of a team.

Activities include some or all of:

    • helping set up the church before the service, eg putting out books, preparing the altar
    • welcoming all who attend, particularly those visiting for the first time
    • reading from the Bible during the Eucharist
    • leading the intercessions
    • helping to serve refreshments after the service
    • tidying the church and grounds after the service

According to your specific functions, you would liaise with the Chaplain or visiting preacher, as well as the Sacristan and Congregational Wardens.

There are roles for everyone here, irrespective of previous experience. Training and support will be provided as necessary.

Our expectation is that you would take on one of these roles for a year, and then we would review.

Help with Building Improvements

In the coming months we will begin a series of works in the church, to improve the worship environment and repair wear & tear on the building. This will involve some rewiring, new plumbing, remodelling of the vestry and repainting. We may also take up a small portion of the floor.

Major works will be untertaken by contractors, but it would be helpful for volunteers to be available to provide support and undertake lower level tasks.

Would you have a day or a few days to help us? Volunteers could help sanding and painting the dado rail, and also sanding and painting the windows. Other volunteers could help to make a meal for thet day, or provide general support like moving church furniture or clearing rubbish.

Thank you. Your help enables us to keep the costs of the building work to a minimum.
