St. George’s Chaplaincy relies on volunteer support for a range of activities from cleaning the church to conducting worship to day-to-day parish administration.

It is the people that make the Church.

Would you have a few hours in the week to help out in a voluntary capacity? We are currently looking to fill the volunteer vacancies listed below.

St George’s Christmas Fete – Stallholder

St George’s Chaplaincy Council is planning to run a Christmas Fete on Saturday 5 December from 11am. It will take place in the cemetery grounds outside the church.

The Fete will include a number of stalls as well as festivities and Christmas music.

We are looking for volunteers to run our cake stall, plant stall, second-hand clothes stall and book stall, as well as a general refreshment stall. You would be required to:

Arrive relatively early to set up your table, and display the goods you have to sell
Greet visitors who come to the stall, engage with them and help them to find goods they would like buy
Take payments, which in most cases would be in cash, or if necessary introduce them to someone who can help them pay by card. A cash float will be available
Keep the stall tidy, restocked, and safe from tripping hazards throughout the day
Clear away all unsold items, equipment, and personal rubbish cleanly at the end of the day

NB We already have a stock of plants and second hand clothes. For the other stalls you would need to coordinate with the people supplying the goods, before the event.

In addition, we are looking for people to:

put out stalls, welcome visitors and oversee security
donate gifts, bric-a-brac, jams/chutneys, books, prizes, etc.

Church Sacristan

Every Sunday morning we meet at St George’s church to celebrate the Eucharist. It is the central function of the church and it is what binds us together as a community. However this requires a number of actions to prepare the service, ensure it runs smoothly, and return items to storage afterwards.

We are looking for one, or a number of individuals on a rota, to help with the set up and running of our weekly Eucharist at St George’s. Hours include Sundays, being present at least an hour before the Eucharist and staying on the clear up afterwards. Ther will be additional requirements during the seasons of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.

Activities would include:

setting up the church before the service, eg ensuring that vestments, offertory tables and linens are arranged and ready, and preparing the altar
ensuring that altar vessels are kept safe, and consumables like altar wines and altar bread are in adequate supply
returning all objects to their proper place after the service
maintaining the Sacristy where the liturgical items are kept including vestments, sacred vessels, books, etc
maintaining the liturgical linens and vestments including storing and ironing if needed
⁠tidying the sanctuary after the service.

According to the role you would liaise with the Chaplain or visiting preacher, as well as the Chaplaincy and/or Congregational Wardens.

The Sacristan should have a solid understanding of how the Eucharist flows and the basic teachings of the Christian faith, and must be able to work and communicate well with others as part of a team.

Training and support will be provided as necessary.

Our expectation is that you would take on the role for a year, with a review after the first 3 months.

Help with Building Improvements

In the coming months we will begin a series of works in the church, to improve the worship environment and repair wear & tear on the building. This will involve some rewiring, new plumbing, remodelling of the vestry and repainting. We may also take up a small portion of the floor.

Major works will be untertaken by contractors, but it would be helpful for volunteers to be available to provide support and undertake lower level tasks.

Would you have a day or a few days to help us? Volunteers could help sanding and painting the dado rail, and also sanding and painting the windows. Other volunteers could help to make a meal for thet day, or provide general support like moving church furniture or clearing rubbish.

Volunteer Co-Ordinator

The success of the Malaga Chaplaincy is heavily dependent on the kindness of members of the congregation carrying out a range of functions in a volunteer capacity. As with many churches, our pool of volunteers has shrunk somewhat resulting in an unsustainable reliance on a small number of people.

As a result, we are keen to engage a Volunteer Coordinator, themselves a volunteer, to help us identify areas in which additional volunteer activity would be beneficial, to promote the opportunity of voluntary service that the church provides, to reach out to potential volunteers, and help to develop and embed a volunteer culture through training for volunteers and awareness raising with members of the Church.

Working with our Chaplain, Wardens and congregation members, as well as our social media and marketing group, you would be responsible for the selection and fit of would-be volunteers to particular roles within the church and be an ongoing point of contact with them during their volunteering journey at St George´s.

Much of this function can be done from home though from time-to-time meetings with volunteers/potential volunteers would be necessary.

Bar Help

At approximately the rate of one per month over the summer months, St George’s runs Saturday night concerts. These have proved successful, attracting up to 100 people on each occasion. There is an interval during the concerts at which we service drinks/snacks from our bar.

The purpose of this role is to support the running of the bar, to ensure that people are served correctly & swiftly and charged the correct amount. The aim is to ensure that they have time to buy and consume their drink during the interval. Our expectation is that volunteersould work to a rota as part of a team.

Activities include:

- Setting up and stocking the bar prior to opening
- Greeting and serving customers politely and swiftly
- Ensuring customers are charged the correct amount, and counting the income at the end of the interval
- Cleaning up and washing glasses and other crockery/cutlery
- Clearing the bar away after the interval

You will liaise primarily with the Churchwarden responsible for the bar, the Events Manager and other bar staff.

Previous experience of bar work is helpful but is not necessary as training and support will be provided.

Our expectation is that you would take on the role for one season, and then we would review.
