According to the BBC, 13 Labour MPs crossed the floor of the House of Commons today to support a bill brought by the Liberal Democratic party requiring the government to begin negotiations on joining a bespoke customs union with the EU, a policy which the governing Labour party had ruled out in its manifesto.
The result was a tie with 100 MPs voting each way. It was thus left to the Deputy Speaker, Caroline Nokes, to cast the deciding vote, for which she then voted in favour.
But before we get too excited about what looks like a first step to rebuilding the UK’s economic fortunes, the BBC reminds its readers that, “it is highly unlikely (for the bill) to become law unless it receives government support.”
