There is so much division in the US about the war in Iran. But I was surprised to see Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Head of the US Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, come out so clearly against, arguing that the war is most likely not justified under Catholic teaching on legitimate defence by military means.
In an interview with “Face the Nation” recorded on April 2 and reported in the National Catholic Reporter, he expressed his concern that the US military was “compensating for a threat” before the threat “is actually realised.” “I would line myself up with Pope Leo, who has been urging for negotiation,” he said. “…But in the meantime, lives are being lost, both there and also among our troops.”
Broglio’s remarks to “Face the Nation” are at least the third time in recent months that he, whom the NCR explained was “the most recent past president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops”, has publicly criticised US foreign policy.
