The great hymn-writer Timothy Dudley-Smith died on Monday morning in Cambridge, at the age of 97. He wrote the lyrics for some 400 hymns, of which probably the most famous is “Tell out, my Soul”.
He was born in Manchester in 1926, read theology & maths at Pembroke College, Cambridge before studying for the priesthood at Ridley Hall. He was ordained deacon in 1950 and priest in 1951, going onto serve as Archdeacon of Norwich from 1973 to 1981, and Bishop of Thetford from 1981 until retirement in 1991. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for services to hymnody.
In an article to mark his 90th birthday in 2016, Canon David Winter described him as “one of the outstanding hymn-writers of our generation”.
