According to an article in Murcia Today, the Spanish city of Boadilla del Monte, just off the M50 motorway to the west of Madrid, has started building the World’s Largest statue of Christ.
Referred to as the Sacred Heart Project, the statue will, on completion, be 37 meters high with an arm span of 60 meters, making it bigger than the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, by some 7 meters.
And the Sacred Heart is central to the design. According to the article, in the centre of the statue but visible, will be a 2.5 meter high heart, which will descend to the base of the statue during the day – so it can be observed by visitors – before returning to its position at night.
The costs of building the statue are being funded by public donations, via the web here.
