The Guardian published an article outlining the extent to which fuel supplied for UK flights was meeting the UK government’s annual target for sustainability.
Ptovisional data published by the Department for Transport for most of 2025 shows that sustainable fuels (SAF) accounted for only 1.6% of fuel, 20% below the 2% target. This represented little more than 160m litres of SAF, out of the 10bn litres of jet fuel burned in UK flying up to early October.
The article points out that the targets will rise sharply from 2% in 2025 to 10% in 2030 and 22% by 2040.
To date the SAF used has come exclusively from recycled cooking oil from Asia, predominantly China, the Department’s figures showed.
