According to a story in El Cronista, the Catholic Church is reviewing its position on the role of women. The Synod of Bishops from around the world, meeting in the Vatican in October, will dedicate its session to reviewing data gathered as to the role of women in the Church currently and identifying ways in which that role may be strengthened.

Bishops will particularly consider the promotion of spaces for dialogue in the Church where women can share experiences, greater participation in decision making, as well as broader access to positions of responsibility, including in seminaries and theological faculties, and as judges in canonical courts. Not all of these functions are currently closed off to women, but their numbers are few.

This is part of a process of listening to views within the Church, initiated by Pope Francis in 2021. This process is approaching its conclusion, with expected outcomes and decisions in 2025.
