The Diocese of Córdoba is getting ready to welcome its new bishop, Monsignor Jesús Fernández González, who will be sworn in tomorrow, at 11:00 am. Don Jesús will be the 106th bishop of Córdoba, according to the list of Bishops published in the Cathedral (see above), going back to Bishop Hosius in 295AD, famous for presiding over the Council of Nicaea in 325AD.

The new Bishop will depart from the San Pelagio Conciliar Seminary to the Holy Cathedral at 10:15 am, accompanied by the Archbishop of Seville, Monsignor José Ángel Saiz Meneses, and the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Córdoba, Monsignor Demetrio Fernández. Upon his arrival at the Cathedral, he will be received at the Puerta del Perdón by the College of Consultors and the Chapter. Once the new Bishop, the Archbishop of Seville, and the Apostolic Administrator of Córdoba enter the church, they will have a private moment of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Bishop Jesús Fernández González was born on 15 September 1955 in Selga de Ordán, Léon and ordained a priest on 29 June 1980 in the diocese of Léon, the same day as our own Fr Hilary. Among previous offices held within the church, he has been Rector of the minor seminary (1987-1990), Professor of the Higher Centre of Theological Studies at San Froilán Major Seminary (1997-2003), Vicar general of Léon, moderator of the Curia and consultant of the Pastoral Commission of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (2010-2013) and since June 2020, the Bishop of Astorga.

And curiously, the new bishop has the same name as his immediate predecessor! Common Spanish surnames include Fernández and González, and both bishops share them both. The new Bishop is Jesús Fernández González and his predecessor, Demetrio Fernández González.
