Unemployment has fallen by just over half a percentage point to 9.93% by the end of 2025, according to the latest Labour Force Survey figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This was driven by strong job creation, with 605,400 additional people finding jobs over the year.
This is signifiucant because it is the first time since 2008 that unemployment has dropped below the 10% barrier. ‘Spain approaches 22.5 million people employed, a new all-time high,’ wrote Pedro Sánchez on X.
Socially here in Spain this is very good news. It means in effect that benefits from the economic that boom Spain has been experiencing have not been confined to a small number of large firms or wealthy people, but have instead begun to impact throughout the workforce, and hence society at large. That said, significant differences remain between age groups: youth unemployment is still very high at 23%, making it difficult for many young people to become financially independent and move away from home.
