English language news site, Spainenglish.com, reported on the continued strengthening of Spain’s labour market, with the number of people registered as unemployed down in May by 36,323 compared with April, leaving a total of 2,320,721 people looking for work, the lowest figure recorded for the month of May since 2007.
At the same time, the number of employed people paying Social Security has climbed to an all-time high of 22,337,806, with an increase of 1.05% in May, making this the second-strongest May performance on record. Seasonally adjusted figures show employment up by 63,737, extending the country’s run of uninterrupted job growth to 64 consecutive months, with gains driven by the hospitality sector, administrative & support services and health & social care.
Self-employment has also reached a record level, with 3.46 million people registered as self-employed, almost 46,000 of whom have joined the system in the past year.
