The Guardian reported that the Spanish government is to launch a national public transport pass that will allow people to travel anywhere in the country by bus or train for a monthly fee of €60, or €30 for those under 26.
This was unveiled by Pedro Sanchez on Monday, when it was announced it would come into effect in late January and would “change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport for ever”. He said the pass, which would allow people to “travel anywhere in the country” on middle-distance & suburban trains, and national bus services, could help some workers to cut their monthly travel costs by as much as 60%.
The scheme follows a similar initiative in Germany, which in 2023 introduced a €49-a-month ticket covering regional rail, metro, trams and bus services.
“We’re talking about 2 million people who will be paying less each month to get to work, to get home or to do their day-to-day stuff,” said Pedro Sanchez. “That’s what governing is about: making the important things easier for ordinary people.”
