Data for 1970 – 2023 published by Visual Capitalist shows how Spain has gained 6th place in global life expectancy rankings while its spending on health care per head is second lowest in the top 15. While we might not like the fact that health spending is so low, to achieve such a high ranking for life expectancy – one of the key performance indicators of a heath service – at the same time, is a significant achievement.
Spain’s 6th place represents a life expectancy of 83.67 and a health spend of $3,901 per capita, and comes just below 5th placed Italy (83.72, $4,046) and above 7th placed France (83.33, $6,036).
You may be interested to know the UK was in 27th place (81.30, $5,413), just below 26th placed Germany (81.38, $7,248) and a few places above 31st placed US (79.30, $12,023), all three spending much more on healthcare than Spain does.
As Christians we are rightly concerned with well-being in old age, but nonetheless keen to see our public services efficiently run.
