Did you know there was a ‘Floating Christ’ statue in the church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Benagalbón? Worth a visit according to an article a few days ago in Sur.
The figure, which is some 2.3 metres long and weighs c50 kilos, is fixed to the ceiling and ‘hovers above the pews, as if it’s floating above the congregation’.
It was created by Catalan sculptor, Salvador Mañosa, who was a close friend of the then parish priest, Benito Gil, when the statue was installed in 2005. He was known for ‘combining anatomical realism with less conventional formal explorations’ and his public sculptures can be found throughout Spain.
