The most recent population survey by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), reported in Sur dated July 1st, found that 21.4% of over-65s living in the province were of foreign origin. This makes the province second only in the peninsular, to Alicante, with 24.7%, though in Melilla the rate is higher at 34.7%.

This is in contrast to the whole of Spain where the figure is just over 8% for this age group, and in marked contrast to Granada and Cadiz, despite their also having a coastline continuous with Malaga, where the figures are 5.9% and 4.3% respectively.

To put it another way, almost one in ten foreign-born over-65s who have chosen to retire to Spain have chosen to live in the province of Malaga.

The most recent data provided by the INE as to where these people have come from is dated January 2023 and is as shown below. Clearly the impact of the UK is seen in the highest category, the rest of Europe not including the EU.

European Union, 30.7%
Rest of Europe, 36.5%
Africa, 13.9%
North America, 1.4%
Central America/Caribbean, 1.4%
South America, 12.7%
Asia, 3.3%
Oceania, 0.1%
