Jewish-born Convert to Christianity, unfrocked priest, friend of Casanova, Violinist in a Venetian Brothel and poet…
… just some aspects of the extraordinary life of Lorenzo Da Ponte, the Italian librettist who collaborated with Mozart on some of his greatest operas, including The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte.
On Saturday 3rd October his story, to which there was so much more than his association with Mozart, will be rendered by pianist and performer Damian Whiteley in Mozart & Me — a highly entertaining one-man show bringing to life the fascinating world of Mozart, opera and one of its most colourful characters, Da Ponte himself.
Written and directed by Melvyn Morrow, Mozart & Me explores Da Ponte’s extraordinary story with music, comedy, storytelling and operatic flair. The show has toured internationally, including performances in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Switzerland.
Expect a very different kind of classical music evening: part concert, part theatre, part stand-up comedy — and a revealing journey into the life, loves, adventures and mishaps surrounding Mozart’s remarkable librettist.
Damien Whiteley
Originally from New South Wales, Damian, as he himself relates, was first taught to play violin and piano by “an Irish nun in the Australian outback”. Later he would study music and languages at the University of Sydney before continuing his musical training in London and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. His international career has included performances at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Teatro Real in Madrid and Opéra Comique in Paris, as well as work with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants.
Damian has been based in Málaga since 2011, where alongside performing he coaches professional singers and works on his own compositions.
Now, for one special evening inside St George’s Church, Málaga, he brings Mozart & Me home.
