Euronews reported this week on a survey of some 5,000 people in 26 countries, conducted by American-based remittance company Remitly, to identify the nations they believe have the best manners, as well as their own nation.

The United Kingdom was ranked the most polite country in Europe and third most globally, behind first placed Japan and second placed Canada. Is that what we would expect? And where would you place Spain? In fact Spain comes in in 23rd place, below France and Brazil, but above Belgium and Italy!

In explaining the UK’s position, survey analysis makes reference to the frequent use of “please” and “thank you” in English conversation, plus our self-deprecating humour, and queuing culture. 😎

The article adds that, “Ironically, respondents from the UK ranked themselves among the bottom half of countries in terms of politeness. Perhaps the British were too polite to put themselves before others.”

Why is this important for us as a church? In fact the words we use and the way we treat oneanother, speak volumes about our respect for other people. But in some cultures, the Netherlands (which came 18th) for instance, straight talking is often considered more a sign of respect than minding your ‘Ps and Qs’!
