Do you generate more electricity from solar than you need? Are you frustrated by the lousy feed-in tariff you get from your supplier? Then read on.
A great, and very simple, idea popped up in today’s European Correspondent. Those of us who, for some of the year at least, generate more electricity from solar than we consume, could be donating it to people in need – at least if we lived in Austria.
This idea was given birth by Austrian energy cooperative, Robin Energyhood, as a way of supporting people at risk of energy poverty.
According to the paper, “It’s a win-win for both sides. Those in need are relieved of their worries about the next electricity bill. In contrast, donors, mostly financially better off, socially aware people, can decide how much unused energy they want to pass on to the needy.”
Somewhat surprisingly the system works without intermediaries: a simple registration on a website is all it takes to make it happen.
For myself, I’d like to see exactly how it works. But I’d also very much like to see it here in Spain, where we will soon be awash with solar power!
