A story in last week’s Guardian covered a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which said that Israel was to blame for 81% of ‘intentionally targeted’ journalist killings in 2025 – the second year running in which Israel was responsible for a significant majority.
Israeli fire killed 86 journalists last year out of a record total of 129, so exactly two-thirds, the majority being Palestinians reporting from Gaza. Of the 47 that the CPJ classified as intentionally targeted, or “murder”, 38 (81%) were killed by Israeli troops.
The report said that at least 104 of the 129 journalists killed had died in connection with conflicts. Apart from Gaza and Yemen, the deadliest countries for journalists were Sudan (9 killed), Mexico (6), Ukraine (4) and the Philippines (3).
