Today the leader of the Church of England, Archbishop Sarah Mullally, met Pope Leo in Rome.
Although planned obviously for many months, the visit was timely, coming so soon after the attacks on the Pope by Donald Trump, for not giving support to his war in Iran.
Archbishop Mullally thanked the Pope for what he had said about injustice and praised his call for hope: “Your Holiness, you have spoken powerfully about the many injustices in our world today, but you have spoken even more powerfully about hope. Your pilgrimage to Africa was full of life and joy. The world needed this message at this time – thank you.”
She added that his Africa trip “reminded us that despite our sufferings, people long for life in all its fullness and countless people are working each day for this vision of the common good”. She said that while there was “inhuman violence, deep division and rapid societal change” in the world, “we must keep telling a more hopeful story”.
