The project to build a railway line linking Algeciras, in Cádiz, with Nerja, in Málaga, is now taking shape. In June the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility awarded the contract to draft the feasibility to the joint venture WSP Spain-Apia and Multicriteri-Mcrit. They are now identifying solutions to improve rail mobility in this sensitive area, as well as new sections connecting towns that currently have no connection.
The coastal train will particularly highlight the Campo de Gibraltar, which would be directly connected to Málaga, and avoid the tiring and costly journey by car.
The feasibility, which is scheduled to be completed in 18 months, identifies five distinct sections (see picture above): Málaga-Fuengirola, Fuengirola-Marbella, Marbella-Estepona, Estepona-Algeciras, and Málaga-Nerja.
