When you are next in Gibraltar, why not visit our sister parish, Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral, who have rebuilt stained glass panels using fragments from windows broken by the Bedenham explosion in 1951. The new panels were dedicated at the 75th anniversary of the explosion at the end of April. One example above.
When a naval armament carrier Bedenham exploded on 27th April 1951, all the stained glass windows in Holy Trinity Cathedral were shattered. The east window above the altar was replaced with new stained glass, thanks to a donation from the family of John Mackintosh, but the other windows were replaced with plain glass.
Some fragments of the old windows were kept, and these have now been assembled, with some new glass, to make four decorative panels to hang in front of the plain windows. The work was overseen by one of the Port Chaplains, Rev Hugh Ellis, together with a friend from the UK, Prof Martin Parsons. The new windows are being paid for by church members, in memory of loved ones.
