The Religion Media Centre published a strange little story. Apparently, in Poland, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wroclaw has banned the singing of Ed Sheeran’s song “Perfect” at church wedding ceremonies. Other banned singles are Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and the Beatles’ “All You Need is Love”.
The story reported that this was announced in a statement entitled “Musical abuses in Churches”, a reaction by the church to an increase in couples asking to include secular songs, and made the point that this was inconsistent with the true nature of a wedding service, to “sanctify and bless the sacrament of the couple”.
What do we think of this? It caught my eye particularly as I am rehearsing to sing Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” at my son’s wedding later this year! Surely the love he sings about, and indeed the love in the Beatles’ “All You Need is Love” is totally consistent with Christianity and with what happens when couples get married in church.
