We read in the Church Times a few days ago that a shortlist for the vacant post of Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England and ceremonial head of the Anglican Communion, has been agreed. But it has not been released. While this is frustrating, it is, of course, understandable.
Lord Evans, the chair of the Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) responsible for the appointment and a former head of MI5, described the process as one of “discernment” rather than straightforward “selection”.
The CNC, which has held two of its scheduled three meetings, since convening in May, has 17 voting members. A final meeting will be held in late Septemner. If they can achieve a two-thirds majority in favour of a single candidate, we should know the outcome in early October.
