I am grateful to Mother Doreen for sharing a topical story that appeared on Premier Christianity about the connection between one’s faith and one’s sporting achievement, based on the inspiring performance of the Lionesses in the Euro Championships. Only after I had read the article did I realise it was written on the day before their ultimate triumph in the final against Spain. You could almost write it all over again!
As the article shows, there is inspiration in both directions. There are players who take great inspiration for their football from their faith. The article gives an example of Michelle Agyemang’s on pitch prayers. Apparently she is a member of Ballers In God (BiG), a footballers’ discipleship group founded by footballer John Bostock, and wears BiG cross-embossed socks, a sign of her faith on the pitch.
But at the same time the article talks of the inspiration we can take from the ongoing belief of the Lionesses, who lost their opening group game to France, and yet came back from two goals down in their quarter-final to beat Sweden on penalties, did similar against Italy, and even the final against Spain followed similar pattern.
